I am sure 'Rainman' would have aced this test, that does not mean he was not profoundly handicapped. The Raven Matrices have been widely used to suggest that 'autism' is just being differently wired.

The most confounding variable that afflicts autism research is the inability to seperate cognitive impairment (mental retardation) from secondary autistic-type symptoms. The AGRE data set of multiple incidence families uses the Raven Matrices instead of the Wechsler scales.

The monthly 'New autism gene discovered!' reports based on the AGRE sample cannot tell if the genetic findings are related to cognitive impairment or 'autism'. The very few tests of normally intelligent autistic people (Wechsler scales) have consistently not replicated genetic findings from the AGRE data set which does not include standardized IQ scores ie. Wechsler scales.

I think that this only proves that Autistics think different. It also seems to prove that we are worse at higher-order reasoning. Doesn't that make us less intelligent?
